What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is a sterile, single-dose, non-pyrogenic water for injection.

Sterile Water vs Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic water for injection has an extra preservative agent added into the water called Sodium Chloride. Sodium Chloride is a colorless liquid that has low toxicity and low vapor pressure. This preservative enables repeated withdrawals from the same vial.

On the other hand, Sterile Water for Injection is single-dose sterile water that does not contain any bacteriostatic, antimicrobial agents, or added buffers.

Additionally, Bacteriostatic Sodium Chloride further differs from the previous two as this preparation features the addition of 9 mg of sodium chloride (NaCl) per milliliter, along with added bacteriostatic preservative.

Bacteriostatic water is used for diluting or dissolving pharmacological preparations meant for intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous injection. Bacteriostatic water for injection is only for parenteral use and must be combined with pharmaceuticals that require dilution or dissolving prior to administration.
